The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) Tennessee Chapter celebrated the mid-point of their Man & Woman of the Year® fundraising campaign at a unique songwriter’s event, United By Hope, Fighting With Song, with live performances by Creed’s Scott Stapp, Matchbox 20’s Kyle Cook, Shay Mooney of Dan & Shay, and Austin Jenkes of NBC’s “The Voice.” The event was at The Pleasant Hill Mansion, Governors Club in Brentwood.
Just before the event started we spoke to Shay Mooney of Dan + Shay who said, “To do something like this is such an honor for me.”
Mooney, who became a new father this year, added “To do something like this that benefits kids is a wonderful thing. I can’t imagine if this was my kid who was affected by this disease. It’s great to be here and perform tonight and make a difference for those kids.”
A special moment of the evening came when a couple got engaged shortly after Shay Mooney began his song “From the Ground Up.” Preceding the engagement, Mooney had even stated this would be a great time to get engaged.

In talking about why he chose to be a part of the event, Kyle Cook of Matchbox 20 said, “Over the years Matchbox 20 has been involved with a lot of events like this one and I’ve seen the impact on the kids and their family when you raise money for events like this.”
As Kyle Cook’s set finished, the rain came down and the venue was moved from the tent to inside the mansion. As the event reset for Stapp’s set, we spoke to him before he performed asking him how he got involved in the fundraiser.
“We got involved through a friend and decided to partner with and be a part of this event because we believe in it and we definitely want to be involved with this organization like this that we believe in,” said Stapp.
Stapp now calls Williamson County home and this is his first time to perform in Williamson County solo since moving to the area. Since Matchbox 20 is originally from Central Florida, like Stapp, we asked if had ever had the opportunity to perform with Kyle Cook but he says they definitely crossed paths but last night was a first for the two.
