Columbia State could not overcome a 5-run first inning from Midland College and though they gave a valiant effort fell short of a comeback in the 10-7 loss.
The Chargers fell behind 7-0 after one and a half inning and only those who have never seen CSCC play a game all season, thought it was over.
They responded with three runs to make the score 7-3 after two innings. We have seen the Chargers make huge comebacks before this season, but this game had a different feel to it. Midland kept adding on to the lead. Whenever Columbia State would score, Midland would score again.
Wes Neiderland hit a two-run homer in the 8th inning on a fly ball to right field that made the score 10-7, giving the Chargers a chance.
In the bottom of the ninth they would be given a chance to tie the game. With runners at second and third, Neiderland stepped to the plate again with two outs. If he left the yard one more time…new ball game.
However, Neiderland fell behind 0-2 and went down swinging to end the game and the season for Columbia State.
The Chargers end the season 46-13 and just three games shy of a national championship. They will find out next week where they finish in the final poll for the NJCAA.
