Joy of Food – Public House, Chattanooga

During the cold, gloomy winter days of February, I needed something to look forward to, so I decided to book a trip to Chattanooga over the long Easter weekend. On the Thursday before Good Friday, I packed up the car and made the short two and a half hour drive to my mini-vacation destination. I found a nice looking, well-reviewed, pet-friendly rental house on www.airbnb.com, which ended up being the perfect place for us to stay.

Once I checked in with my excellent host and got my Labradoodle, Frodo, settled in, I met some friends for dinner at the Public House. We sat outside on the patio near an outdoor heater, which provided just enough warmth to complement the evening chill in the air.

This was my first visit to the Public House, but it will not be the last. My friends had been there before, and they knew how to order. At first, I was overwhelmed with the menu, because everything looked good. The Public House offers a wide variety of fresh, unique snacks, small plates, cheese plates, dinner entrees, local produce, sides, soup, salads, and sandwiches. To start with, we ended up ordering three snacks, a cheese plate, and the complimentary bread and honey butter to share.

Snack #1 consisted of creamy Pimento Cheese, Grilled Sourdough, and crispy Fried Pickles. This is one of the Public House’s most popular appetizers, and it did not disappoint. Delectable Deviled Eggs & savory Bacon Brittle made up Snack #2. And Snack #3 was a plate of delightful Sweet Potato Cakes with Molasses. Then, our waiter introduced us to the Cheese Plate. We decided to try the soft, buttery, silky Green Hill Camembert from Georgia; the creamy, melt-in-your-mouth Sequatchie Cove Dancing Fern cheese, which is made in Tennessee; and the rich, firm, piquant Spanish Sheep’s Milk cheese, Manchego.

For my entrée, I ordered the crispy, moist Public House Fried Chicken with rich, smooth Macaroni & Cheese, which came with a side of hot sauce. For my taste, the hot sauce was a little too sweet, but I know many other people enjoy its flavor. My entire experience at the Public House, including the ambiance and the company, was outstanding. As far as the food was concerned, the Cheese Plate and the Pimento Cheese snack stood out as the highlights of my meal. Considering the scrumptious, local food and the affordability of the appetizers, soup, salads, sandwiches, and sides, I probably would dine at the Public House every week if I lived nearby. Everything was so wonderful that I even forgot to take a picture of the food! Special thanks to Laura Ellinor with Public House for sending me a few photos to post with my online review.

I look forward to my next trip to Chattanooga for many reasons, but the Public House will always be a definite dining destination for me. You can check out the Public House online to peruse their menu or plan a private event at www.publichousechattanooga.com, and you can visit the restaurant in person at 1110 Market Street, located in Warehouse Row.
