After winning two games in the last three years in the Ravenwood, Franklin, Centennial and Brentwood dominated District 11, the TSSAA redistricting gives Summit a fresh start this year with mostly new opponents as the Spartans continue building a still young program.
There were definite bright spots in 2014 in the shadow of Summit’s winless season. Statistically they weren’t even the worst defense or offense in District 11. Dickson County gave up more and scored fewer points per game than Summit despite having a better record. Also in the last game of the season Summit put up 21 points: its highest score of the year, and against Ravenwood, at that.
This year, in 5A Region 5, Summit’s new district results in schedule perhaps more forgiving to coach Brian Coleman’s slow and steady building project; after all, this is a program that didn’t even exist until a few years ago. Coleman enters his second season as head coach, and as Brianne Welch of PrepWeekly noted last year, when building a successful program from scratch slow and steady progress matters more than wins.
Summits new district opponents are Shelbyville Central, Lincoln County, LaVergne, Independence, Franklin County, Stewarts Creek and Columbia Central.
Summit plays at Spring Hill on August 22, and can make a statement by playing competitively: the Spartans started 2014 with a 32-0 loss to Spring Hill. Another repeat game is against Independence in September. Indy, who plays Lincoln County in our week 3 GOTW, beat the Spartans 48-7 last year.
