7 Horse Trails in Middle Tennessee

The equestrian trail at the park at Harlinsdale Farm is open on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday 30 minutes prior to sunrise and 30 minutes after sunset.

Harlinsdale Farm has been called the most significant historic farm associated with the modern Tennessee Walking Horse industry. In 1933, W.W. Harlin established the farm on the northern outskirts of great renown in the fledging Tennessee Walking Horse Industry. As famous as the farm itself is its prize stallion Midnight Sun. This famous horse became the first repeat World Grand Champion. The success of Midnight Sun in the ring and as a sire has never been matched by any other Tennessee Walking Horse. Even today, most champion Walking Horses trace their lineage to Midnight Sun.

From the 1940’s until the present day, the farm has served mainly as a breeding operation, run by the Harlin Family. In 2004, the Harlin Family expressed interest in selling the 200 acre farm to the City of Franklin, understanding that the property would be developed as a passive park while maintaining and protecting the Walking Horse history. The City of Franklin readily agreed and began an extensive public planning process to design the master plan that would reflect the history of the farm, while including the wants and needs of the public.

With many acres of scenic woodlands, Natchez Trace State Park offers many options for the equine enthusiast. Ride on over 250 miles of public use trails when visiting the Wrangler Camp. The Bucksnort Wrangler Camp offers camping, bathhouses, electric and water hook-ups at over 60 sites. Each campsite has a horse rail so you can camp with your horse or board at the equestrian center next door.

Percy Warner is one of two municipally owned and maintained horse trails in Davidson County. Bring your own horse to explore the ten miles of trail in Percy Warner. The horse trailhead is located at 2500 Old Hickory Blvd. The trail is  open from dawn to dusk, seven days a week. Individual usage of the horse trails is free of charge.

Peeler Park offers 8 miles of equestrian trail and is located on Overton Rd. just off of Neely’s Bend Rd. Peeler Park is a large pastoral park tucked away at the end of a long curve in the Cumberland River known as Neely’s Bend. Its bucolic farmland setting on the river features a 1.9-mile paved multi-use path, equestrian trails, a public boat launch with associated truck and trailer parking, and an air field for remote-controlled planes. Recently, Metro Parks completed the purchase of the Taylor Farm property just north of the park, an addition of 381 acres,giving Peeler Park a total of over 650 acres of parkland.

Laurel Hill Wildlife Management Area has 14,942 acres of wilderness, hunting area, chert roads and lakes. There are miles and miles of horse trails and endless miles of ATV riding chert roads. The lakes are well known for their large assortment of fish including Bass, Crappie and Blue Gill. The horse trails are rolling to exciting. They are great for a family experience. They can accommodate long or short stays with 30 hook ups for trailers with water-electric, two barns with stalls along with a round pen, and restrooms and showers. They also have an efficiency apartment for rent. It’s open year round with plenty of room for the large trailers and motor homes. They also have space and trails to bring your wagon and carriage for long or short wagon rides.

Cedars of Lebanon State Park offers 12.5 miles of marked trails for horseback riding. You can also explore hundreds of miles of forestry fire trails in the joining State Forest. A current negative Coggins is required for all horses entering the park. Horses should be unloaded near the riding stables.

Bowie Nature Park, located in Fairview, TN contains a glorious 700+ acres of forest, lakes & trails, Bowie is a great place for individuals, couples & families to come and enjoy their time. Bowie Nature Park has an expansive 17 miles of trails. The majority of the trail system is shared by hikers, mountain bikers, and equestrians, however there are sections of the trail system that are designated foot traffic only. Due to rain, there may be trails that are closed; they suggest calling the phone number below before coming out.
