The Battle of Franklin Trust’s will present a Hands on History program tomorrow (Saturday, March 22nd), highlighting the military service of young boys during the Civil War.
Not old enough to enlist, these young men participated in the war effort by becoming drummer boys, working alongside their older friends and family members.
On Saturday, class participants will learn about the experiences of these boys by watching demonstrations of songs the soldiers would sing in battle, crafting their own drum and enjoying a show-and-tell of Civil War era musical instruments.
“This educational opportunity allows children to learn about their historical counterparts during the Civil War era,” said education and membership coordinator Angell Roberts. “We hope participants will be inspired by the contributions of these young drummer boys in our nation’s history.”
The class, open to children ages 5-12, will be held at The Carter House from 10a-noon. Reservations are required. The cost is $15 per student. For more information or to register, contact Angell Roberts at 615-794-0903 or at [email protected]
