Demolition Date Set for Old Franklin High Gym

The former Franklin High School gymnasium on Columbia Avenue, near the Carter House, will be demolished beginning June 9.

The gym was left standing after a lightning-ignited fire in 1956 destroyed the rest of the school, which reopened later in 1957 at its present site on Hillsboro Road. The gym was the newest portion of the old school, and was used for decades afterward for community sports and other activities.

Its demolition will allow the reclamation of important battlefield property north of The Carter House, which will enhance the developing Carter Hill Battlefield Park.

At 8 a.m. on June 9, Patrick McIntyre, executive director of the Tennessee Historical Commission and State Historic Preservation Officer, and Eric Jacobson, The Battle of Franklin Trust CEO, will make remarks and honor many individuals who have made this initiative possible.

They will speak at The Carter House Visitor Center, 1140 Columbia Avenue, Franklin, TN 37064.

Clearing the site of the most furious fighting in the 1864 Battle of Franklin is part of an ambitious master plan for the future Carter Hill Battlefield Park.
