AIG Announces Layoffs

AIG

Thursday, insurance company AIG announced layoffs, affecting the Middle Tennessee area. Multiple sources report that 128 people in Nashville were laid off.

The company still employs more than 900 people in Brentwood, which mainly support life insurance operations for the company.

AIG issued the following statement concerning the layoffs:

On January 7, we restructured our AIG Financial Network (AIGFN) business by moving certain AIGFN financial professionals to AIG Partners Group, our distribution channel for independent agencies that work with a small number of carriers. Unfortunately this involved staff reductions at AIGFN locations throughout the U.S. While difficult, we strongly believe that these adjustments are critical to AIG’s overall strategic direction and simplified business model to ensure efficient resource allocation going forward. We are committed to delivering innovative insurance products and excellence in service as we strive to become our clients most valued insurer. And we are committed to treating all AIG employees with dignity and respect.

WKRN reports that Melinda Kelsey with the Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development told News 2 the state did not receive notice from AIG.

Kelsey said federal law requires notification if more than 100 people are laid off and the state requires a “warn notice” if more than 50 are laid off.

AIG’s Tennessee offices include: Brentwood, Nashville, Murfreesboro, as well as Kingsport, Memphis, Knoxville, Chattanooga and Jackson.
