The Rolling Stones exhibit opened in the Musicians Hall of Fame and Museum in Nashville this week. Nashville is the last U.S. stop before heading back to the UK. Promoting the exhibit are five sculptures of the band’s iconic ‘tongue and lips’ logo installed throughout Music City. The sculptures were commissioned by artist Jon Pasche.
Inside the exhibit, it explains more about the logo with a quote from Pasche.
“I received a commissioning letter in which I was asked to meet with Mick Jagger to discuss a new logo. Mick presented me with a cutting from something he found in a local corner shop. It was a picture of Kali, the Hindu goddess with the pointed tongue that came straight down. And he said, ‘This is the kind of thing that I’m into. I quite like this.’ I think it was during that meeting that I thought, maybe the use of a mouth would be something to base some ideas on. I went away and did some drawings, which were very similar to what we ended up with and he really liked it.”
The quote continued by saying, “Lots of people ask me if it was based on Mick Jagger’s lips and I have to say initially it wasn’t, but it might have been something that was unconscious. Having quite quickly got the basic idea of what I wanted to do, everything felt right about it, so it was really a matter of trying to express it in a very simple and easy-to-reproduce manner.”
