Studio Tenn season opener “Gypsy” will be playing this weekend during the Pilgrimage Festival, so if the thought of being outside all day on a farm is not your thing, we’ve got another great option for entertainment. They are recommending to ticket holders that you give yourself plenty of time to arrive at your allotted showtime. Saffire and Lyrics will be open all day along with the shops and Honest Roast coffee shop.
It seems as if there is a revival of “Gypsy” as London is also playing “Gypsy” and while I haven’t see the London production I can tell you I would easily put the Studio Tenn’s production toe to toe with London. “Gypsy” was first seen on Broadway back in 1959, however, the story line is ever clear and true today. A sign of a true classic. We have 3 things that you need to know about “Gypsy.”
1. The front of the house has been moved outside of Jamison Hall. No more whispering and trying not to disturb others while you pick up tickets at will call or purchase tickets. Also, the merchandise and bar have been relocated to outside as well.
2. Seating changes- If you have attended previous productions, you will notice that there are no longer seats on the side of stage. The seating chart has been reconfigured to allow for more stage area and it actually gives more seats for patrons. However, there are a few obstructed view seats which is barely noticeable and guess what? For those few moments you might have to lean to the side, you get a discount.
3. I really don’t like to be negative but I have to say I hated “Gypsy.” I hated how well Nan Gurley played Mama Rose, so well at some point my eyes filled with tears. Nan Gurley played a once in a lifetime role, took me in and I didn’t like it one bit. I hated how realistic the set looked and with its brick walls, and gilded proscenium arch. I hated all of those costumes with the amazing detail (6 racks of costumes to be exact). And while I’m at it…Mia Rose Lynne, who played Louise, took us from the shy, awkward teen to a confident woman- yep, I hated it. Seriously, what a way to start a season. You will be hating yourself if you don’t see this production and you don’t even have to visit London!
“Gypsy” runs through October 4. Purchase your tickets at Studio Tenn.
