Hatchbacks seem to be one of the most popular cars on the market right now, but they weren’t always many people’s vehicle of choice. Ten years ago, consumers were extremely tired of the hatchback style because it reminded them of the econobox cars from the 1960s and 70s, like the station wagon. This style of car became so unpopular that they almost disappeared from the road until recently.

If you’re not familiar, a hatchback is a car that has a door or opening window on the back panel of the car that makes loading things into the vehicle easier. Hatchbacks are more popular now due to their good fuel-efficiency, cargo space, and smaller size. The hatchback is ideal for someone who longs for more space than a sedan, but is not interested in buying a huge SUV. Hatchbacks are also compact cars, so they are easy to park in crowded places.

The most popular models of hatchbacks are the Toyota Prius and the Ford Focus. The sales of hatchbacks has grown significantly in the 21st century. According to IHS Automotive, the sales percentage has doubled over the past ten years. The percentage of hatchback sales was 2.6% in 2005, and jumped to 4.8% in 2015.

More and more car makers are producing hatchback styles of popular sedans, such as Honda and Chevrolet. The cars will probably continue to grow in popularity as issues like environmental concerns and the price of gas continue to change. Whether you love or hate the hatchback, it seems like this style of car is now here to stay for good.
