Police are seeking anyone who may have seen a maroon Lexus SUV on Tuesday morning before it went over an embankment after exiting I-65 South at high speed, smashing the car to pieces and leaving the 18-year-old driver in critical condition.
The girl from Brentwood was driving a 2009 Lexus RX 350. in Tuesday morning’s crash at W. McEwen Drive and I-65 South at about 9:15 a.m. After going up the McEwen exit ramp the car barreled across two westbound lanes and five eastbound lanes of traffic on McEwen and jumped two medians before careening down the southbound on-ramp embankment adjacent to the Drury Plaza Hotel. According to police, the speed that the vehicle hit the ground at the bottom of the embankment was great enough that the two front seats, center console, and engine dislodged from the rest of the SUV. They landed 80 feet away in the hotel parking lot.
Certified crash reconstructionists from the Franklin Police Department’s Critical Incident Response Team are still investigating.
Items such as the vehicle’s onboard event data recorder (similar to an aircraft black box), driver toxicology, and witness accounts will be thoroughly examined as part of the investigation.
Anyone who may have seen the maroon Lexus SUV on I-65 South, prior to Tuesday morning’s crash is asked to call Franklin Police: (615) 794-2513.
