With the opening of an American Girl Doll Store right here in Williamson County, there has been a lot of interest in the store, and the dolls themselves. The first four American Girl dolls: Molly, Samantha, Kirsten and Felicity were introduced by Pleasant Company, founded by Pleasant T. Rowland who was an educator. When the company was sold in 1998 the company was sold to Mattel, Inc. In the collectors world, there is a belief that after Ms. Rowland retired from the board in 2000, there was a noticeable difference in the quality of both the dolls and accessories.
Early Samantha, Molly and Kirsten dolls were made in West Germany and the clothing these dolls wore in their original packing all bear tags with this information. From body color to style changes, the dolls have evolved through the years.
