Big Brothers Big Sisters of Williamson County has highlighted one of their mentors in honor of April’s National Volunteer Month. “Bigs” get matched with a “Little” in the program and often they do not know what they have gotten themselves in for as Big Brother George Midgett found out. George was paired with a quiet 11 year-old little brother.
After three years, Michael the still quiet 14 year-old opens up to him. “He is a really good kid. I’m really glad that we were matched together,” said George. Their relationship has grown and George feels like Michael is his real little brother. They share life experiences together and Michael led the John Early Museum Magnet Middle School basketball team to a city championship, was named the MVP of the tournament and received a “Mr. Basketball” title in his conference.
George works in the athletic department at Vanderbilt University and he and Michael attend football games together each season. In addition to their sports connection the two go to museums, the library, and have tried doing photography. Soon they plan to attend a cooking class. George says this match through the program is “special.” It ended up being much more than he could have imagined.
Volunteers make the Big Brothers Big Sisters program work and they can always use another helping hand. Spending one-to-one time with children in the community is a life changing event for both the adult and child. Have you considered being a Big Brother or Big Sister?
