She’s only eight-years-old, but Crockett Elementary third-grader Faith Gorey is already an inspiration to her fellow students and teachers.

After being diagnosed with dyslexia last year, Faith has more than risen to the challenge which is why her teachers were thrilled to name her as the school’s Academic All-Star for the 2017-18 school year.

“Hard work pays off,” said Faith’s teachers. “Faith is proof of that. She never gives up no matter how hard it gets. She just keeps on working, and that inspires us as teachers.”

Faith’s mother says the teachers and staff at Crockett have been incredible throughout the whole process.

“The support at Crockett has been amazing,” said Susan Gorey. “One of five people is dyslexic, and the more dyslexia can be talked about and supported through schools like Crockett the better off we all will be.”

Since her diagnosis, Faith has worked extra hard with her teachers to improve her reading skills. She is now able to enjoy chapter books, read her own tests and participate in book club.

“Book club is where you discuss the books you’re reading and you make predictions about what you think will happen,” said Faith. “I didn’t always like to read, but I do now.”

In addition to reading, Faith spends her free time tumbling, playing the piano and participating in the school’s Best Buddies program, which aims to end the social and physical isolation of students with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Looking ahead to the future, Faith pledges to keep working hard while helping others better understand dyslexia.

“For any child who struggles with reading in kindergarten or first grade, identification of dyslexia is huge,” said Susan. “Faith is a great example of how dyslexia does not equate to failure. Dyslexia equates to success.”
