Dr Tony Urbanek HeaderHali Platt suffered from Temporomandibular Joint pain, or TMJ, for three or four years before she was diagnosed with Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMD). Her symptoms included pain, lockjaw and a “clicking” sound when she open and closed her mouth. “The straw that broke the camel’s back is that I suffered from really bad migraines,” recalls Platt. “I couldn’t function.”

Platt was attending college in Utah at the time. She eventually got a referral from a doctor in Nashville — where her parents live — to see Dr. Anthony Urbanek.

Anthony Urbanek, D.D.S. M.D., is a Board Certified Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon who specializes in the treatment of TMD/TMJ.

Dr. Urbanek has developed a cutting-edge medical device called ExplainMyPain (patent pending), which is a custom-fitted splint that’s worn overnight by the TMJ/TMD patient. Similar in style to a retainer, it’s designed to take the pressure off the back teeth, and off the Temporomandibular Joint. The back teeth are the areas where stress, damage and inflammation to the joint occur.

It’s important to note that TMJ/TMD is a medical issue, not a dental problem, and is most effectively treated by an oral surgeon. Additionally, simple bite guards are not the equivalent of Dr. Urbanek’s ExplainMyPain medical device.

Made of non-porous acrylic, the ExplainMyPain splint is comfortable, custom fitted to each patient and worn overnight. It allows only the front teeth to touch, leaving a small space between the back teeth. By creating this space, the patient is no longer able to put pressure on the joint, which relieves the inflammation and TMJ.

Once Platt was fitted with Dr. Urbanek’s ExplainMyPain device, her symptoms subsided. “Literally it was life-changing,” declares Platt. “I know it sounds dramatic but until you suffer from lockjaw and migraines, you don’t understand the pain and it really is life-changing.”

Platt says she used to wake-up with migraines three to four times a week, however, since wearing the ExplainMyPain medical device, her headaches are few and far between.
