Yesterday, the BRIT Awards paid tribute to David Bowie by posthumously awarding him the BRIT Icon Award. Accepting the award was Bowie’s longtime friend Gary Oldman.
Afterwards, popstar Lorde hit the stage for a surprise unannounced tribute to David Bowie. Joined on stage by members of Bowie’s own backing band, she sang the Hunky Dory track “Life on Mars?” and it is chilling.
Maybe it’s because it was the BRIT Awards and not the Grammy’s or maybe it was because Lorde’s voice is naturally haunting and Bowie’s own band backed her; whatever it was, Lorde’s performance seemed more emotional and passionate than Lady Gaga’s Grammy tribute. Whether you were a fan of Bowie’s or not, this is a must-watch performance.
“I was so nervous in the wings, and then I whispered to myself ‘just sing it to David’, and nothing else mattered,” Lorde said of the performance
