Preds Trade David Legwand

David Legwand

The Preds pulled the trigger Wednesday on a trade that sent center David Legwand to Detroit for winger Patrick Eaves, prospect Calle Jarnkrok and a third-round pick.

It is a trade that strategically sacrifices, or at least hurts, the chances of a late playoff push by the 26-26-10 Predators who are currently six points out of the last wildcard spot.

The payoff will come next year and beyond, and makes sense because Legwand is an unrestricted free agent after this season so the Preds could have easily lost the longtime center anyway over the summer.

Instead, they turned what could be nothing into something substantial. Not quite magic but certainly encouraging and a good bet and decision by GM David Poile.

The 2013-2014 season has been a roller coaster of disappointment–with all the ups and downs and unpredictability but little of the fun.

There is a small bit of a let down for Preds fans who were holding out hope for a late push now that goalie Pekka Rinne has made his long delayed and awaited return from a near-season long injury.

But as they say, there is always hope for next year.

Legwand had 10 goals, 30 assists and 40 points this year for Nashville.
