The Rebels have managed to go 4-0 this season. Franklin High School has not been able to claim an undefeated record this early in the season since 2008. That year, the maroon-and-white finished off the season with a 13-2 record overall and 6-1 in the district.
Since 2008, Franklin’s winning record has gone down significantly. However, 2013 poses new beginnings for the Rebels.
Head Coach Donnie Webb says the boys have been working hard since last winter and are playing really hard. “We felt like we would be much improved from last season,” stated Webb, “We had several returning starters and their leadership on and off the field has made us a much better football team.”
As of this week, Christ Presbyterian Academy (5-0), Ravenwood (4-0), and Fairview (5-0) are the only other schools within the Williamson County district who have managed to stay undefeated, thus far in the season.
Franklin will travel over to Fayetteville, TN to take on Lincoln Co. (3-2) this week, and Webb says that the Falcons could pose as a threat to the team’s record.
“The only team and game that we are worried about is Lincoln County,” confirmed Webb, “Lincoln County will be a very tough challenge for our team. We have to travel to the pit and be able to play well on the road.”
Not only will traveling be an obstacle for the team, but Lincoln County’s playing style may be as well.|
“Lincoln County’s style of play is much different from what we have seen the past few weeks,” expressed Webb, “Our boys must adjust to the differences and play physical football.”
If Franklin can snag the win from under the Falcons wings, the Rebels will be hand-in-hand with the 2008 season record. In week 7, the Rebels will face district rival Brentwood. The year 2004 is the last time the Rebels were able to obtain a 6-0 record.
Juniors, such as Joe Critchlow, Malik Grimes, Zack Beam, and Garrison Matthews have played a significant part in Franklin’s success this 2013 season. Webb says many of the players have learned a lot through past seasons.
“Many of them had valuable playing experience last year, and that experience is helping them in situations this year.”
Of course in their senior season, RB Colton Black, DB Zack Orange, TE Ben Hagaman, LB Tyler Beasley and WR Tony Flemister are just a few of the many upperclassmen players who have stepped up to leadership roles.
“Our seniors are determined to be good leaders and lead by example,” stated Webb.
The Rebels will kick-off at 7 p.m. over at Lincoln Co. on Friday.
