In a speech in Havana, Barack Obama declares that the U.S. stands with the people of Belgium, as well as NATO and EU, in a shared commitment to defeat the “scourge of terrorism.”

A nuclear power plant in Tihange, eastern Belgium has been evacuated, a spokesperson for Engie, the French company that operates the plant, tells CNN. The spokesperson said the evacuation order came from Belgian authorities, but would not give any further details about why the order had been given. All but essential staff at the plant have been sent home.

CNN Terrorism Analyst Paul Cruickshank says security outside the airport had been beefed up even before today’s attacks. “This was a hard target,” he says. “This was not a soft target.” Cruickshank says that although the attacker/attackers did not appear to get through security inside the airport, the fact they were able to get through security outside the airport is “troubling.”
