We hear it all the time- It’s a Wonderful Life here in Franklin. With the upcoming performances of Studio Tenn’s production of ‘It’s a Wonderful Life,’ we set out to find the ways the Franklin community compares to Bedford Falls. So here’s our comparison of Franklin to Bedford Falls–we think you will be surprised at all of the similarities.
1. Bedford Falls is surrounded by a canal.
Remember the scene where George Bailey wants to jump from the bridge? So, we don’t have a canal in Franklin but we do have a large body of water called the Harpeth River. And how can you compare a canal to the beauty of the Harpeth River?
2. Architecture on Main Street
Both Bedford Falls and Franklin have a proper Main Street with historical architecture on the buildings lining the Main Street in both cities. You will also find historical homes in both cities with Victorian influences many which have been saved and restored just as George Bailey restored his home in Bedford Falls.
3. Bedford Falls was an affluent community of sprawling homes with horse farms.
Much like Franklin has its affluence and one of the largest horse farms is located right here in Franklin–Harlinsdale Farm. It is also a park for the community to enjoy.
4. A train ran right through Bedford Falls
Today CSX is still operational in Franklin with over 1,500 miles of track handling over 1.5 million carloads of freight on the state’s rail network. CSX fact sheet said,”For nearly seventy years, the CSX Santa Train has distributed toys along a 110 mile-route through Kentucky, Tennessee and Virginia. In 2014, more than 15 tons of toys and other gifts were distributed to the thousands of people gathered for the annual Appalachian holiday tradition.”
5. People of Bedford Falls were willing to help their fellow resident,George Bailey, in a time of need. Over and over again the residents of Franklin are willing to step in when residents, buildings or community projects are in need. The Franklin Theatre is a great example of how the community came together to preserve a piece of history right on Main Street.
