7 Tips to Make Steeplechase More Enjoyable

The 75th Steeplechase event takes place on Saturday, May 14th. It’s like the Grammy’s of the South, but with horses! It’s a day to enjoy the beauty of our area and be a part of a long standing tradition that benefits the Monroe Carrell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt.

We’ve put together this list for those who are first -timers or long-timers and need a reminder of what to bring to make this year’s event the best yet.

Dress to Impress

It’s time to pull out all the stops on your outfit. From head to toe, this is an event where ladies wear dresses, guys wear ports coats and bow ties. And, of course, we can’t forget the hat. Wear a hat or if you just can’t wear a hat, choose a fascinator.

Choose the Proper Shoe

Save your heels for the after party. The forecast calls for rain the next couple of days meaning there will be mud or very soft grass for walking on Saturday. Wear your flats or wedges on Saturday.

Protect your Skin

It’s an all day event. Bring your sunscreen. Reapply throughout  the day. Trust us when we say, you will probably get a sunburn if you don’t follow our advice.

Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate

Bring lots of water. You are allowed to bring a cooler into the event, but glass bottles are not allowed. Be sure to drink water throughout the day to avoid heat stroke.

Don’t Forget the Food

Traditionally, Steeplechase attendees will meet for breakfast before heading out to the event. Don’t forget you will need food throughout the day. We’ve seen some elaborate food displays in the past. However, you can easily order ahead from local restaurants or places like Whole Foods to provide you with a picnic lunch and snacks for the day. Bring your own trash bags for easy clean-up  throughout the day.

Traffic

Be prepared for traffic. Percy Warner Park is located on Old Hickory Boulevard. Your ticket will  have your designated parking area listed.  For more directions about where to park based on your ticket, visit the Steeplechase website.

Be Mindful of Others

With 25,000 people in attendance, it can seem chaotic.Bring your patience and try not to be on a viral video brawling over who knows what.
