Studio Tenn Pays Homage to “Genius” Ray Charles

Studio Tenn

Ray Charles has been referred to as a “genius” and creator of soul. Charles music covers a range of music from big band, soulful and a nod to country.

The latest in the Studio Tenn legacy series shows off  Charles music and you could even say it perfectly showcased the “genius” of  Ray Charles along with the “genius” of Studio Tenn in how they orchestrated the show. From the setting of this theatrical concert to the selections of music there was no detail missed. The stage was set to look as if it  took place  in a recording studio where the  audience feels as if they have a front row seat to a jam session where history was made.

With such an incredibly talented cast, how does one begin to talk about favorites? A newcomer to Studio Tenn -Piper Jones ,who was also a contestant on American Idol 2015,and  in the words of Melinda Doolittle would have us throwing not one but both of shoes while she performed “Come Rain or Come Shine” and  “America the Beautiful.”

Matt Giraud,American Idol fourth place runner-up Season 8,brings a Justin Timberlake vibe to his performances. Two not to miss moments are “Mess Around” and a Ray Charles favorite “Georgia.”

Belmont student Chris Lee not only can sing but he can dance. And then there is Studio Tenn’s Laura Matula, mainstay for most of Studio Tenn’s productions never disappoints. The Reverend Lawrence Thomison took us to church and again makes us wish we could rush the stage with more shoes, maybe borrow the shoes from your neighbor  in his performance of “Heaven Help Us All.”

Don’t miss your opportunity to see Tribute to Ray Charles. Perhaps we should convince Studio Tenn to have an audience section where one is allowed to get up,dance, sing a-long. It’s just that good.

The show runs April 14 through May 1 in Jamison Hall at The Factory, with performances on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings at 7:00 PM and Saturday and Sunday afternoons at 2:00 PM. Tickets can be purchased online at StudioTenn.com or by calling the Studio Tenn Box Office at (615) 541-8200.
