Q & A With John Oates of Hall & Oates

John Oates

The legendary duo Hall & Oates will be performing at Pilgrimage Festival on September 25th, closing out the festival on the Frye Midnight Sun stage. With hits like “Rich Girl”, “Maneater” and “Private Eyes”, this duo has claimed the title of third best selling duo of all time.We had the opportunity to interview John Oates to learn more about what music we can expect to hear from the duo.

Congrats on your Star at the Hollywood Walk of Fame, what was that like to celebrate such an honor?
Daryl and I have a longstanding relationship with Los Angeles since we got our first recording contract there in 1971. We also recorded our first number one single, “Rich Girl”  in Los Angeles in the mid 70s, so it means a lot.

You’ve had so many big career moments, is there one that stands out the most among all of them?
They are all special moments and I feel fortunate to have experienced a bunch over they years.

You moved to Nashville many years ago, what brought you here?
I started coming to Nashville in the early 90s to write songs and realized that it was a close knit musical community. I moved here in 2007 and started recording my early solo albums and making a lot of friends. I knew that this city was the place where I could find myself as a solo artist and have never looked back.

Your memoir is coming out early next year, what will we be surprised to learn?
That I had a very different set of roots and influences before I met Daryl Hall and the music that we have made together over the years is not totally representative of who I am as an individual musician.

For those who attend Pilgrimage Festival, what will we hear from Hall & Oates?
A lot of big hits and some deep album tracks. Daryl and I have so much music that we have made together over the years that we both have agreed that when we play together we do not include stuff from our individual solo careers.

It’s not too late to purchase your tickets for 2016 Pilgrimage Festival, the line-up this year includes Grace Potter, Kacey Musgraves, Jason Isbell, and Beck, just to name a few.
