June Awareness and Recognition Series Part 5

June is National Safety Awareness Month so take the time as we come to the end to educate yourself and your family on how to prevent injuries. The theme this year is “Safety Starts with Me.” Engaging everyone in safety is the goal of this program.

Each week of June was designated a focus with a weekly theme. Preventing slips, trips and falls, employee wellness, emergency preparedness and Ergonomics were key sessions for businesses to use in training employees. Other topics like summer safety and safe driving were also emphasized. This June celebrates the 100th year of the National Safety Council, and they estimate nearly 6 million lives have been saved through collaborative efforts.

Drowning, falls, poisoning, burns, choking, fire, unintentional overdoses and sports are all potential dangers to you and your family. Motor vehicle safety includes not allowing yourself to be distracted by phones, music, unsecured drinks or cargo. Many of the situations listed above are avoidable and the time spent preventing is life saving.

The NSC suggests you be trained in first aid and CPR, get experience using a fire extinguisher, join your local Community Emergency Response Team and refresh skills like driving a car, motorcycle or boat through locally offered training courses. Most of all during summer months make sure your whole family learns how to swim.

More than 2 million people are injured each year while participating in outdoor activities. Be aware of the dangers in your local park, be mindful of weather conditions, and inspect your own personal gear. Don’t let something simple like worn out hiking boots or worn tires on your bicycle cause a preventable injury. Above all be safe and take a buddy with you when you explore the great outdoors.
