Coauthored by Adele Faber and Elaine Mazlish, they toured and gave workshops for years. Joanna Faber is coming to the Spring Hill Library to boost the morale of local parents and teachers. She will present a 1 hour lecture, followed by Q & A, on Friday, February 24, at 6:00 p.m., and a 3-hour interactive workshop Saturday, February 25, 9:00 – 12:00 p.m.
In the lecture, Joanna Faber uses a lively combination of storytelling, and audience interaction to model the language that reduces conflict and promotes cooperation between parents and children. Drawing on her background as an educator, her experiences as an elementary school teacher in Harlem and a mother of three, and the workshops she gives around the country to parents and teachers, she will share the communication principals that dramatically improve relationships with children of all ages — from tots to teens – and make life with children more rewarding.
The Saturday morning workshop will be an interactive, hands-on experience for parents and teachers to focus on communication principles and practical skills that can be put to immediate use to make relationships with children more satisfying and rewarding. Through a lively combination of Joanna’s presentation, discussion, written exercises and role playing, participants will learn to: cope with children’s negative feelings, engage children’s cooperation without bribes or threats, set limits while maintaining goodwill, encourage children to assume responsibility, resolve conflicts creatively, use praise effectively.
The methods are friendly, supportive and, best of all, effective. Everyone will go home with handouts full of useful techniques that they can immediately put into practice at home and in the classroom. No sign up necessary.
For those who wish to enhance their communication skills after this special weekend of events, the Spring Hill Library will be offering weekly parenting workshops in March and April. This will provide a warm supportive setting for parents to talk about the stresses of child rearing and develop strategies that will make for a happier more peaceful family life.
