If you live near downtown Franklin and woke up to a loud sound Thursday night around 10 p.m., you didn’t dream it.
It was a planned explosion of an old artillery shell with assistance from military personnel from Fort Campbell at the county rock quarry south of downtown Franklin, according to the Williamson County Sheriff’s Office.
The WCSO got a report about an explosive found at a county house last night. From there, as per routine, the sheriff’s office called the Tennessee Highway Patrol and, because it was a military ordnance, personnel from Fort Campbell were called in, Sharon Puckett, public information administrator for the WCSO, said.
Authorities transported the shell to the county rock quarry, near Beasley Drive off Columbia Avenue, where it was safely detonated around 10 p.m.
“They believe the ordnance was from the 1950s,” Puckett said.
When possible the WCSO’s issues alerts to residents in cases like this to let them know to expect a loud noise, though last night there was no warning given.
