Six Creekside Elementary fifth graders earned State champion status at the 2026 Harry D. Sabine State Chess Tournament.

On March 21, Arjun Savoji, Shlok Chaudhari, Gautam Karthi, Phillip Buyanovskiy, Boris Bourgeois and Namasvi Narra competed against 14 teams from across Tennessee. After two overtimes, Creekside took down the top-rated chess team in the state and won first place.

“I couldn’t be more proud of these students,” said Creekside Elementary teacher Beth Waight. “Their dedication to the game is inspiring. They spend hours each week studying and practicing, and they generously give their time to help other students learn as well. Their hard work and perseverance has truly paid off.”

Clovercroft Elementary students also competed in the competition and placed third.
