It must have felt like a recurring nightmare for Page in its 27-14 loss in the second round of the Class 5A playoffs against Summit.

Somehow, they’d been here before. Earlier this year when Summit beat Page, the Spartans jumped ahead to a 21-3 halftime lead.

Friday was worse, as the Spartans rode running backs George Odimegwu and Payton Craig and two Page fumbles to a 20-0 halftime lead.

Both defenses came ready to play, and both were committed to stopping the other, meaning stopping Bubba Johnson for Page and Odimegwu, Craig and company for Summit.

Summit did that better than Page. The Patriots ran for just 14 yards on 13 first half carries.

Craig had 14 carries for 50 yards in the first half, and Odimegwu had a 58-yard touchdown catch and another score rushing.

That big catch came on Ethan Cash’s only completion of the half–he was 1-2 for 58 yards and the TD– as Odimegwu went deep to give Summit the first points of the game. Quin Slaughenhoupt missed the extra point so it was 6-0 Spartans with 3:21 left in first quarter.

Summit scores on 58-yard George Odimegwu TD catch, misses extra point up 6-0 3:21 left in first quarter against Page

Page lost a fumble Summit took over at the Page 35. A 15-yard roughing the punter penalty saved the Summit drive, and ended the first quarter.

Then Odimegwu took it in, on a 10-yard sweep with 11:06 left in the second. Summit took a 13-0 lead.

Page then opted to go for it on 4th-and 2 from their own 44, but was stopped short and the Spartans took over again nearly halfway through the second.

The Patriots held the Spartans to a punt, but things continued to go badly for Page.

Pats quarterback Cade Walker was a lone bright spot, throwing 9 for 13 for 92 yards in the first half, but his lone mistake was costly.

On a third-and-long he was sacked and ball hit the ground for Page’s second fumble of the half and Spartans defensive end Kiston Arnold ran it 46 yards back to score with 4:10 in the half. It was 20-0.

Trying to get on the board before half, Page got down to the Spartan 25, and went for it on 4th-and-4. But Walker’s pass fell short and Summit took over with 1:24 left in the half.

Page got on the board with 3:53 left in the quarter, on a Johnson 1-yard touchdown run to cut the lead to 20-7.

Summit put it out of reach when Odimegwu scored his third touchdown of the night on a 9-yard run with 8:27 left in the game to make it 27-7.

Johnson added another 1-yard touchdown run with  less than a minute left to make it 27-14 ,but it was too late.

Summit will host Beech next week in the 5A quarterfinals.
