Sunshine and mud were the view on Tap Root Farms Saturday as almost 900 people ran through the mud in support of Proverbs 12:10 Animal Rescue and Salute OurHeroes during the Franklin Mud Run.
Saturday was the first venue of the year for the touring mud event, and with the sun lighting up the green fields and trees just past the hushed town of Nolensville it is easy to see why Tap Root is the favorite stop of Paul Courtaway, long time organizer of the Mud Run.
“What I like to see is engaging the community to action,” said Courtaway. And that’s truly what the Mud Run is meant to do.”

Paul, who got involved in the Mud Run with his Marine buddies, has been all over the world in the past 28 years, and his mission is to find ways to involve the communities of caring people that don’t always get a chance to show their enthusiasm and support for veterans and local charities. Paul said the Mud Run offers a fun and filthy way for people to reach out to helpful organizations around their area.
“I’d like to grow the race to be a signature race of Franklin,” Courtaway said. “People love the farm here.”
The nearly 900 people that ran in Saturday’s event were giving to charity when they signed up for the run. A portion of the proceeds went to support the Proverbs 12:10 Animal Rescue, which is an online organization in Nashville that boards dogs and cats as well as helping find foster families for the animals.
With three different loop courses, the event was set up to meet the needs of all levels of athleticism. There was a kid’s course and pets were allowed to run with owners.
As the accomplished runners crossed the finish line they were greeted by bottles of water and the chance to get hosed off by the creek.
Some local businesses were set up with tables at the finish line, including LifeSpring chiropractic, which offered free massages and trail mix bars for runners.
“I love it,” said Courtaway. “I’ll go broke doing this before getting out of it.”
