We sat down with Craig to learn more about how he got started in coffee business, products they offer and what exactly does SYP Coffee mean?
How and when did you first start working in the coffee industry?
SYPCOFFEE, with ‘SYP’ an acronym for Savor. Your. Planet., is a dream officially realized for me in 2015. Up to that point, I had spent my career in luxury automotive marketing which melded my passion for all things cars and creativity. Since business school though, I had noodled the idea for a coffee company – another product passion of mine – but never found the time to pursue in my ‘spare’ time. It wasn’t until I lost my parents in relatively short order – my Dad to complications stemming from a rare disease called Picks, and Mom to cancer within a span of just 2 weeks between diagnosis to passing – that I truly understood the meaning of life being short. Finally discerning between cliche and fact, I decided it was then or perhaps never, and I took the plunge – leaving the company I loved to pursue coffee full-time, one of the scariest, yet most exciting things I have ever done.
Enrolling in a 14-week program at the Nashville Entrepreneur Center – a fantastic local resource for budding entrepreneurs – helped me refine and validate my business concept to a point that afforded me the confidence to go ahead and build a product.
What made you want to open a coffee roasting company?
Coffee is such a fascinating sphere for me both in the countless product nuances – from farming through preparation – to its ability to bring people together throughout that pipeline in equally countless capacities. I had no illusions about my lack of experience, including within the consumer packaged goods segment, but I possessed a distinct drive to learn and, quite frankly, became a sponge. From attending coffee tradeshows, to specialty coffee shop tours around the US, product benchmarking to my goal of speaking with at least one, new seasoned business professional a day throughout 2015, I arrived at my very clear goal to build a company that, ultimately, makes it exceedingly easy and rewarding to recognize those very special people in your life who make a difference.
Can you tell us about the products you offer?
SYPCOFFEE is designed to be simply the best possible coffee you can send someone as a gift, in lieu of say flowers or a fruit bouquet. Less perishable, more personal and arguably more beautiful than the latter (!), we start with exceptional, always single-origin, small-lot coffee beans carefully roasted and then artfully packaged in beautifully designed containers with unique personalization allowances – for example, your personal messaging is always transcribed by hand.
