Brentwood Drafts Running Resolution for Smith Park

On Monday the Brentwood Planning Commission decided to draw up an ordinance to make running okay in Smith Park.

Last October, before Marcella-Vivrette Smith Park officially opened, the community got wind of the no-running rule and started voicing their concerns. One community runner, Richard Kenmuir, created a Facebook Page called “Runners for Ravenswood” which gained over 1,000 “Likes” and is now celebrating the commission’s decision to revise the rule.

“Thanks to everyone who contacted the city commission to help make this happen,” a recent post by the Runners for Ravenswood Facebook page reads.

The main concern that remains for commissioners is that large groups running together may cause problems for others using the trails and increase chances of injury. While Metro Parks has some limits on how many may run together, it’s a rule that is difficult to enforce and if adopted by Brentwood may end up being moot.

The park has now been open since November, and while commissioners had planned to revisit the no-running rule in the summer, public outcry brought the issue to their attention sooner, and they are ready to make the change to the rule within the next couple of meetings.
