A cyber security mobile unit will soon be coming to a high school near you.
It’s all part of a $25 million grant for career and technical education programs across the state. Columbia State Community College submitted a proposal for a mobile unit to assist in offering Cyber Defense Courses to Williamson County schools.
The proposal was accepted, and Columbia State was awarded more than $840,000 to build the 53-foot mobile unit, which will offer both traditional seating and areas for students to work in teams.
Columbia State instructors will teach the classes, and students will have the opportunity to earn dual enrollment credit toward a technical certificate or an associate of applied science degree in Computer Information with a concentration in Cyber Defense.
“The intentions for this classroom are to prepare students to enter into the information technology realm, specifically cyber security,” said WCS Career, College and Technical Education director Jeremy Qualls. “There are more than 4,000 jobs that need to be filled within Williamson County and the Middle Tennessee area. We hope to build this program of student with insight from local industry leaders so the students will be learning real-life, relevant skills.”
Superintendent Jason Golden and Columbia State President Dr. Janet Smith signed a Memorandum of Understanding Thursday, November 21, at Columbia State’s Williamson County campus. The program’s pilot will begin in the fall of 2020 with a limited number of schools.
