Ravenwood Takes Win in OT over Franklin

Williamson County Football

By Amber Pennycuff

Ravenwood conquered the field tonight in a victory over an undefeated Franklin.  The Raptors were in a battle for the win but fought hard to take the “W”.

To kick-off the game, Ravenwood fumbled the ball and Alex Lyons was there on the recovery for the Raptors.  Franklin was not going to give in that easily.  6:50 left in the first half, Ravenwood quarterback Avery Jankowski was sacked, and the Rebels would take over the ball.

Throughout the entire first half, the teams were playing “hot-potato” with the ball and remained scoreless until the third quarter.

Ravenwood did an excellent job plowing through the Rebels defense throughout the game.  Despite interceptions and incomplete passes, the Raptors seemed to still come out on top.

Jankowski’s throw right before halftime posed as a review-on-the-play and was ruled as a complete pass to Austin Percy, to give the Raptors the upper hand as the crowd roared over the loudspeaker.

Early into the third, Franklin fumbled on the play, as Jeb Stewart recovered the ball for Ravenwood.  The Raptors took over, and the ending play resulted in a field goal attempt and 3-points on the board.  That was only the beginning.

3:54 left in the third, Critchlow sailed one right into Colton Black to bring in the first points on the board for the Rebels.  The maroon-and-white, “pinked-out” team was now up 7-3.

The Raptors answered right back as Jankowski paired up with Van Jefferson to take a TD and bring Ravenwood up 10-7 with 11:49 left in the game, and in the fourth and final moments of the game.

But, Ravenwood wasn’t done quite yet.

An interception made by Lyons would bring the ball right back into Raptor territory and set up Ravenwood’s next play for a TD.  A Jankowski-Jefferson duo would bring the big red to a 17-7 lead with 8:53 left in the game.

This may have been the play of the game for the Rebels, but Critchlow shot one right to Ben Hagaman for a Franklin touchdown and bring the score 14-17.

Just as you thought the final seconds were approaching, Franklin went for a FGA to bring it 17-17 within the last few seconds and set up for overtime.

The intense pressure was pounding, just as the Rebels ran it in for a TD, but a blocked punt would put Franklin behind by one-point.  The J & J duo showed up in the end zone for Ravenwood and the extra-point was good!

The win by Ravenwood was sealed off 24-23, and the spirit of the young men, certainly, showed what sportsmanship and winning is all about.
