The Williamson Source is proud to bring you the Civil War History Video Channel “Tales from the Battle of Franklin” in cooperation with many local historians and experts. These glimpses into our local history will take you back to the days of the Civil War, show you a bit of the local war landscape and offer pieces of knowledge you may not have heard.
The role of Franklin and her residents during the Civil War and rebuilding after are prominent and need not be lost to current and future generations. Did you know that the total burial sites after the battle of Franklin outnumbered those living here? Only about 800 residents called Franklin home and more than 1,200 graves scattered the countryside. John McGavock formed the Burial Association with friends and donations. Ten weeks of the spring of 1866 the digging team moved Confederate soldiers to the 2 acres now known as the McGavock Confederate Cemetery on Carnton Plantation.
