Disney’s “Cinderella” hit the box office this past weekend. Right off the heel of Into the Woods, and the announcement of the Frozen 2, I guess we can’t really let it go? Here are the three things you should know before seeing Cinderella.
1. Relax- They didn’t change the story. Unlike “Maleficent,” where the story was reimagined. “Cinderella” holds to the traditional story told back in the animated 1950 version. Complete with kind household critters, a prince, and most importantly a fairy godmother. And I can’t leave out the glass slipper.
2. Swoon Worthy Dresses-All of the dresses, but especially Cinderella’s dress at the ball was so beautiful and dreamy. Most of the girls in the audience were saying ooh and ahhh as Cinderella’s old dress was transformed into the blue dress that seemed magical.
3. Perfectly cast characters makes the story more believable- Lily James of “Downtown Abbey “plays the role of Cinderella or shall we call her Ella. Richard Madden of “Game of Thrones” plays the Prince. They have such charisma together giving you the impression they really did fall in love at first sight. Cate Blanchett is the perfect stepmother in every calculating way down to the last moment.
And lastly,” Frozen Fever” is the short film that precedes “Cinderella.” After the announcement of the “Frozen” Sequel 2 last week, the excitement among the theatre for the short film was noted by squeals and clapping. In the short film, the setting takes place in the summer. Elsa and Anna are bonding over Anna’s birthday surprise party with Olaf stealing the show at every moment he enters the picture. In such a short time, “Frozen Fever” will have you wanting more and worth the extra time spent watching the show. The play on words in the title makes more sense at the end but we won’t spoil the outcome so you can see it at the theatre.
Overall, “Cinderella” covers all age categories and while some critics called bippity boppity flop, due to the pace of the movie. I feel as if that is unwarranted. It was entertaining! There were grandmothers, mother, teenagers, and little girls of all ages in attendance. We sat next to some teens in the theater and asked why they chose to see “Cinderella” and they told us, ” doesn’t everyone love Cinderella?” Yes, every girl at heart loves Cinderella and so will you if you go see the movie.
