Hundreds of students, teachers and parents across the country are answering a call from Women’s March Youth EMPOWER to take part in a 17 minute National School Walkout at 10am on March 14. The walkout is a response to the tragedy that occurred at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida last month, in which a gunman opened fire, killing 17 and wounding many others. The goal of the walkout is to garner the attention of Congress and urge them to pass federal gun reform legislation.
Locally, some Williamson County Schools (WCS) students have shared with principals their intent to participate in the walkout, according to an e-mail sent by WCS Superintendent Dr. Looney to parents.
The e-mail states that while WCS is not promoting participation, they “recognize students’ constitutional right to assemble peacefully and to engage in free speech. For students participating, peaceful assembly will be allowed at predetermined locations designated by school administrators to maximize student safety.”
To ensure student safety, students will not be allowed to leave campus without being properly checked out by a parent and visitors will not be permitted on campus during this event.
“My highest priority is to maintain a safe and orderly environment for all students as they learn and grow,” writes Dr. Looney.
WCS encourages parents to talk with their children to help them understand that “all other rules outlined in school handbooks remain in place.”
