by Julie Hannah Taleghani, Williamson County Republican Chairman
This summer I became concerned when Franklin Alderman Bransford was quoted in the USA Today and The Tennessean as saying that the historic monument on our square is “no longer appropriate.” I just kept wondering who she was listening to because I was hearing folks in Franklin say how important the monument is as part of our community’s history – not to mention, the millions of tourism dollars spent over the years to attract people from around the world to visit Franklin. We invite tourists to experience our charm and learn more about our historical significance, specifically related to our Civil War history. Plus, the monument is a memorial to the soldiers on both sides of the battle and this part of our heritage can be used to further educate the public while honoring soldiers.
In the weeks that followed, I learned more about Alderman Bransford and her opponent. Thus, I researched each of their public voting records with the Williamson County Election Commission. It should concern everyone that Alderman Bransford didn’t even vote last November in the election for Governor, US Senator, US Congressman, State Senator, and State Representative. How could she ask people to continue to vote for her if she hadn’t even voted in such a big election less than a year ago?
Most importantly, there are major differences on key issues. For example, it became clear that she has no problem with the government meddling in the local economy and local housing markets through market manipulation, formulas and bureaucracy. While work force housing is a noble goal, the primary goal of our local government should be to provide security, safety and basic services to our citizens while also protecting property values. We must cut red tape on businesses instead of adding more government regulations as Alderman Bransford is proposing. We must protect taxpayer funds rather than search for ways to make our citizens more reliant upon government.
The role of the Williamson County Republican Party is to educate the community on issues and records while working to get Republicans elected at all levels of government. We are encouraging citizens to vote for the proven conservative, Steven Undercoffer in this contested Alderman At-Large election on Tuesday, October 27. It does matter who governs.
