Montgomery Bell Academy tight end Josh Meriwether scored on a 2-point conversion in overtime, leading the Big Red to a 25-24 road victory over Brentwood Academy.
MBA’s Jackson Hannah scored a touchdown the play before to pull the Big Red within two before Meriwether caught a shovel pass from quarterback William Tyrone.
BA got first possession in overtime. Running back Tomario Pleasant’s spinning, 10-yard scoring run, followed by the extra point, but BA up, 24-17.
But the Eagles were whistled for an extra man on the field before MBA’s first snap, giving the Big Red the ball at the BA 5. Hannah’s run brought BA within one, then, following a time out, the Big Red made the decision to go for two.
A score from a blocked punt helped give MBA an early lead. But Brentwood Academy quarterback Wade Williams hit wide receiver Preston Sagan with a 10-yard pass with 3:43 left in the third, putting BA up by seven after the point-after. Jordan James added two key runs on the drive to set up that touchdown.
MBA tied it at 17 with a scoring run, followed by the point after, with 9:13 left.
With the defenses controlling the flow of the game and a light rain falling, the teams played the remainder of the fourth quarter conservatively, with neither team threatening to score.
MBA had the best shot, driving to the BA 39 with just over two minutes left. But a pair of stops by the Eagles’ Jack Victory helped thwart a potential scoring drive dan force a punt.
The Eagles came off a bye week. Two weeks ago, McCallie snapped BA’s 24-game wining streak.
BA (7-2) ends its regular season at Ensworth next week.
