A Tony Award-winning team of producers have launched a new online streaming service that will enable fans to watch live performances of their favorites shows on their computers, TVs — even their cellphones.
It’s called BroadwayHD and it’s the brainchild of Stewart Lane and Bonnie Comley, whose credits include shows like “Legally Blonde,” “On Your Feet!” and “A Gentleman’s Guide to Love & Murder.”
Their mission, they declared on BroadwayHD’s website, is to “promote and preserve live theatre, extending the reach of Broadway and Broadway caliber shows to anyone.”
“Nothing will ever replace the magic of live theatre, but we passionately believe that Broadway and all forms of professional theatre should be more accessible to all, no matter location,” said Comley.
Just how much magic could be conjured up by watching a big production like “The Lion King,” “Oklahoma” or “Guys and Dolls” on an iPhone remains to be seen.
But Lane said the idea is not to replace Broadway, it’s to give people a taste of what they’re missing.
“We’re not going to replace the Broadway experience, but if you can’t get to Broadway, get to BroadwayHD,” Lane said. “The idea is to get somebody to say, ‘I’ve got to see that live and put $150 down to buy a ticket.”
Local Managing Director of Studio Tenn, Jake Speck, told us,” I’ve had this idea for a long time and have often said it would be so cool if we could offer a ‘virtual season ticket.’ I see this as a good thing! The more accessible world-class theatre is, the greater chance we have at cultivating a broader, theatre appreciating audience. I don’t worry about people choosing to stream shows over coming to a show live. There is no substitute for live theatre. Stream away and enjoy! I know I will!”
