Man Pleads Guilty to Machete Assault, Gets Probation

Christopher Dalton, a Franklin man arrested recently for aggravated assault with a machete, plead guilty to reduced charges on Tuesday.

Despite a lengthy criminal record and a history of assault, Dalton will serve little time in jail as a result of his conviction.

The general sessions judge, in accordance with the district attorney’s request, sentenced the multiple-felon to serve 11 months, 29 days- all but 60 suspended. He will get credit for time served, also. However it is unclear if he is currently in jail or not. Oftentimes after a person is convicted they are given until a certain date to turn themselves in; and besides, it is also unclear how much time he already served.

Originally charged with Aggravated Assault, a Class C Felony, his plea bargain reduced the charge to Assault, a Class A Misdemeanor.

As part of his deal, he must obtain an anger management assessment within 90 days and follow any and all recommendations. Also as part of his plea he may not have any contact with the victims of his assault- Valerie Dalton Leach and Daniel Steele.

On Feb. 12 Dalton was apprehended after going on the run the day before after brandishing a machete while drunkenly threatening the Steele and Dalton-Leach, with whom he sometimes stayed. He had just been released from Williamson County Jail on Feb. 8, after serving time on a probation violation. He has an extensive arrest record:

For the entire eleven years between his 2005 offense and his sensational arrest last week, Daltonwas either in jail or on his way back. This is the fourth time he has been charged with some type of assault. He was found or plead guilty to the three previous charges- with bodily injury in July 2012 and with the threat of bodily injury in October 2007 and January 2012; he also was charged and plead or found guilty to: DUI in early 2011; 2 thefts- the first for shoplifting in 2007 and the second for theft under $500 in 2015; in March 2007 he was convicted of unlawful possession of a weapon; and vandalism twice- in 2012 and 2014.These charges and other issues led to Dalton being charged with and found guilty of 8 probation violations.

He was charged- but had charges reduced or dismissed- with: public intoxication and disorderly conduct in 2012 ; resisting arrest in 2012 and driving without a license.

He has been through the Davidson County court system, too, where in 2011 he was charged with driving on a revoked license; the charges were, however, dismissed.
