Are you a newcomer to Tennessee? If so, welcome! Music City has a lot to offer, but it also has some quirky laws that could affect you in BIG ways.
Did You Know…?
1. Without a trustee, the State of Tennessee will not let the guardian spend the child’s money without court approval.
2. If you don’t appoint a guardian for your child/children, both families will have to get together and decide who will be your child/children’s guardian. (This law is not just unique to TN — many states have this law.)
3. An 18 year old is no longer a minor…. meaning if you don’t put your money in a trust, they get all of it.
4. If you’re divorced, have a child under the age of 18 and you die, your ex- spouse will manage the money for your child, unless you say otherwise in your will.
5. Without a living will, your family may not know what your wishes were. Without a living will, your parents and spouse could end up in court fighting over what they thought your wishes were.
