Yoshi Gas Service Coming to Cool Springs

The modern gas pump was invented by a man named Sylvanus Bowser in the 1800s. More than a century later, with a tip of the cap to the Super Mario Brothers, a new service named Yoshi is revolutionizing the way people fill their tanks.

And soon they will be coming to Cool Springs.

Yoshi, started a little less than a year ago by four people in California, is an automated gas-filling service. Instead of worrying about going to the gas station and taking the time in traffic out of your day, customers who sign up with Yoshi get their gas brought to their car and filled up at set times- or on demand- for a small monthly fee.

The company operates in California and its first branch outside of that state opened in Nashville in the fall. Bryan Frist, a Harvard Business School graduate and Yoshi founder, grew up partly in Nashville, part of the reason for opening here. And business is booming.

Right now they serve areas of Nashville and Brentwood, around Maryland Farms, with two trucks. A lot of their business has come from employers buying subscriptions for their employees and then the employees get their tanks filled while they are working.

“There are several reasons we decided on Nashville: I am from there originally, so I know the area, and because it is fast growing, the community is thriving. And it is completely removed from our first location in California. Also gas tanks are on average much larger on vehicles here, so there is a lot of demand for gas. Right now we are trying to focus our energy on greater Nashville,” Frist said.

Their prices are competitive with local gas stations. Right now a gallon of gas from Yoshi in Nashville costs in the $1.50 range.

And of course, no standing out in the cold waiting for your tank to fill up.

Frist said Yoshi will soon expand beyond Brentwood. “Very soon we will open up in Cool Springs. We already have about 100 customers in Cool Springs, so we are ready to do it. Getting another truck up and going will be the next step.”

In an era when everyone is on the go, the biggest benefit Yoshi subscribers get is time. Less time in traffic and more time with their family.

“The idea is you go on your way home to your family, to dinner, and have to stop in rush hour traffic for gas, it takes at least 15 minutes. It adds up to about 6-8 hours per year spent getting gas. We look at it as we are giving people back one vacation day a year, basically. There is also the environmental aspect of saving the miles spent and gas wasted going to fill up.”
