Yellow Jackets Swarmed By Spartans In First Round

In the opening round of the 3A playoffs, Fairview was unable to mount a sustained drive and failed to shut down the fast Stratford offense. The Yellow Jackets lost to Stratford 39-0. The loss dropped the Yellow Jackets final record to 7-4 for the season.

Stratford’s big play ability was on full display as the Spartans scored their first four touchdowns of the game on plays of 50 yards or more. Fairview’s only redzone opportunity in the first half ended with a missed field goal, as Jeff Perez’s field goal fell short on the slippery field. Stratford’s William Summers ran for 163 yards and a touchdown on the ground and caught 3 passes for 146 yards and 3 touchdowns. Corey Simmons added 136 yards and a touchdown, while Daniels Williams ran for 82 yards and a touchdown.

Fairview’s offense was outgained by Stratford 501 yards to 143. The Yellow Jackets were outgained on the ground 389 yards to 31 yards. The Spartans were able to overcome 19 penalties for 158 yards on the game, while Fairview had 5 penalties for 35 yards.

Fairview looks to build off the success of this season. While the Jackets will have to replace quarterback Hunter Zimmerman and linebacker Ben Buttrey next year, Fairview returns 1-2 running back punch Jake Beathard and Hunter Caldwell and leading receiver Sam Sanborn. Coach Chris Harris’s squad looks to build on this season’s Region 6-3A runner-up finish next year.
