As we receive the Winter Advisory warnings, we want to give you some warnings and tips on driving in these tricky conditions.

1. Slow Down
Keep plenty of space between you and the car in front of you. With bridges and over passes freezing first, you don’t know what the driver in front of you will encounter so leave plenty of space to allow for reaction time.
2. Don’t brake too fast!
Slamming on the brakes in an icy situation will lead to a dire situation. Brake gently and more often.
3. Drive defensively
Not only do you have to pay attention to yourself, you have to watch other drivers who may be less experienced. Don’t get lulled into a false sense of security because the roads don’t look that bad.
4. Don’t drive your car until all of the windows are completely clear
Have you seen that guy driving with one small circle cleared? Don’t be that guy–wait for your car windows to be completely clear allowing for full visibility.

In addition to driving tips, here are some ways to have your car prepared for winter:

1. Check your tires for correct air pressure and tread
Your tire pressure drops by 1lb every 10 degree drop in temperature. Newer cars have tire pressure sensors reminding you to check that pressure. Don’t forget about your spare tire while checking air pressure.
2. Check your fluids
Make sure your windshield wiper fluid is full. On a winter day, you can easily go thru a half gallon of fluid while keeping your windshield clean. Also, your anti-freeze fluid should be checked.
3. Windshield Wiper Blades
Make sure those wipers are in good working order. When you turn your car off, be sure to turn off the wipers so they will not freeze to your windshield.
4. Have your car battery tested
Batteries lose power when the temperatures drop. If you have a low cell in your battery, you may be left stranded with a dead battery.
5. Have an emergency kit in your car
Your kit should include a blanket, flashlight, first aid kit and an emergency triangle.
