Wine Available in Grocery Stores Friday

wine in grocery stores

by Emily West, Franklin Home Page

Starting Friday, Williamson County residents can place a bottle of wine in their shopping carts while at the grocery store.

When Franklin residents voted on the issue in November 2014, around 14,000 of the 18,000 who cast a ballot, voted for the measure’s approval.

The legislation allows wine sales in stores that derive at least 20 percent of sales from the retail sale of food and have retail floor space of at least 1,200 square feet.

As part of the state’s changes, liquor stores can sell additional items, like alcohol and food publications, cigarettes, lottery tickets, mixers, corkscrews and other supplies related to alcohol and wine. They can also sell beer kegs, empty or full.

In accordance with state law, stores cannot sell wine on Sundays nor after the hours of a package store.
