In 2016, a new population estimate by the U.S. Census Bureau shows that Franklin was the second fastest growing city in the state of Tennessee.

Also, with a growth rate of 3.5 percent, Williamson County was the fastest growing county in Tennessee last year, followed by Rutherford County at 3.2 percent.

Countrywide, Murfreesboro was among the 15 fastest-growing large cities in the U.S. (of cities with at least 50,000 residents), according to census estimates released by the Tennessee State Data Center.

10 of the 15 were in the south, with four of the top five in Texas.

“Overall, cities in the South continue to grow at a faster rate than any other U.S. region,” said Amel Toukabri, a demographer in the Census Bureau’s population division. “Since the 2010 census, the population in large Southern cities grew by an average of 9.4 percent. In comparison, cities in the West grew 7.3 percent, while cities in the Northeast and Midwest had much lower growth rates of 1.8 percent and 3 percent, respectively.”

Murfreesboro, which was the fastest growing city in Tennessee, holds the title for the third year in a row.

Franklin, which now has an estimated population of 74,794 up from 72,610, is the second-fastest growing city in the state for the second year in a row. That is up from 62,487 since 2010, according to the census.

Other estimates included no other Williamson County cities among the 15 fastest growing in the state. There were 37,060 people in Brentwood in 2010, and today an estimated 42,517. Spring Hill is estimated to have gone in the last six years from 29,026 to 37,731, and Nolensville, at 5,861 in 2010, grew to an estimate of 7,580 in 2016.
