The 12th annual Williamson County Battle of the Badges Blood Drive will honor the memory of Williamson County Sheriff’s Office Detention Deputy Robert Andrew Ryan on Wednesday, Aug. 20, at the John P. Holt Brentwood Library.
Deputy Ryan died earlier this summer from injuries sustained in an off-duty vehicle accident. Sheriff Jeff Hughes said Ryan’s servant’s heart was evident to everyone who knew him, and encouraged the community to give blood in his memory.
“This is an opportunity to honor Deputy Ryan’s legacy by helping save lives,” Hughes said. “Rolling up a sleeve on Aug. 20 is a way to carry forward his commitment to others.”
The annual drive unites the Williamson County Sheriff’s Office, Brentwood Fire and Rescue, Brentwood Police, and the Nolensville Fire Department in a friendly competition while supporting a critical community need. According to organizers, someone in the U.S. requires blood every two seconds.
Brentwood Police Chief Jim Colvin emphasized the life-saving importance of donations. “The blood you give may help a neighbor in need, and in some cases, it could even allow first responders to return home safely to their families,” Colvin said.
This year’s event runs from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the John P. Holt Brentwood Library, 8109 Concord Road. Nabholz Construction, one of the event’s sponsors, will donate $5 for every unit of blood collected to the Gary Sinise Foundation in Deputy Ryan’s name.
The Battle of the Badges Blood Drive has collected more than 3,000 units of blood over the past 12 years. To schedule an appointment, visit RedCrossBlood.org and enter sponsor code “Williamsonbob.”
