Will Tennessee Attract Another Large Automobile Manufacturer?

Recently, The Tennessean printed an article where they reported that Fiat-Chrystler CEO Sergio Marchionne might consider moving the company’s headquarters to Tennessee. With GM in Spring Hill and Nissan headquartered here in Williamson County, the odds are good that this new opportunity could fall to Williamson County as well.

Williamson County has positioned itself to attract automotive giants and continues to be one of the most thriving environments for business in the nation. Tennessee was named 4th best state for business by Chief Executive Magazine, placed 3rd for best-managed state in Barron’s Magazine, Ranked 4th for transportation/road quality and 2nd in cost of living by CNBC and is the number one state in the nation in which to retire according to Bankrate.com.

Site Selection magazine has also ranked Tennessee as 8th in the nation for total number of new capital investments projects in the annual Governor’s Cup Awards. Within all of this growth is Williamson County, the fastest growing area in Tennessee. The new Williamson County Chamber of Commerce (WCCC) is busy recruiting and spending a great deal of effort on making Williamson County as attractive as possible for not only new business but for the IT and personnel specialists needed to fill employee positions in such companies.

Justin Saia, Corporate Communications Manager with Nissan, shared with us why they call Williamson County home. “With its livable communities, strong business and government partnerships, and ability to recruit talent from across the country, Williamson County has played a vital role in Nissan’s success since the company relocated its headquarters to Franklin from California. In addition, the Franklin office is in close proximity to Nissan manufacturing operations in Decherd, TN., Smyrna, TN. and Canton, MS.  The Franklin headquarters has now grown to house more than 1,400 employees, with Nissan’s overall Tennessee footprint spanning approximately 10,000 jobs.  With Nissan’s aggressive growth and localization strategy in the Americas, the success of Nissan globally is even more reliant on our Franklin operations.”

Nissan’s U.S. sales were up 12.9 percent in June, creating a new record of 104,124 units. Nissan LEAF sales marked the second-highest month ever at 2,225, up over last June a staggering 315 percent. With June deliveries, LEAF sales in 2013 have already passed the total for all of 2012. Pathfinder sales were up over 208 percent to 8,360. Pathfinder has also outsold its 2012 total in the first half of 2013. Altima sales were up 23 percent to 26,904, a new June record, and Rogue set a new June record as well, up 41.1 percent to 15,518. Business is good for Nissan and Williamson County has helped make it so.
