You probably know the story of Wilbur the pig from E.B. White’s classic children’s book Charlotte’s Web but what you may not know is that Wilbur is a local pig.
The famous pig who lived at Batey Farms in Murfreesboro was hand-selected by E. B. White’s granddaughter for the cover of the 2006 edition of Charlotte’s Web. He became a celebrity of sorts with thousands of visitors coming to the farm to catch a glimpse of Wilbur. He even visited local schools as well.
On Facebook, Batey Farms posted a message. “Farm life teaches us the value of life and the precious cycle as it evolves. Thank you, Wilbur, for teaching us how to appreciate each day we are granted for we ALL are ‘stupendous’ and ‘radiant’ in our own ways!”
Upon learning of the death of Wilbur, fans posted their memories of Wilbur on the Batey Farms Facebook page recalling their visits to Batey Farms or when Wilbur visited their school.
